The wall is not very high, but the foundation that it provides for the garden is a necessity. In our personal finance lives, we also need a foundation. If you have these necessities, you will be able to function in life. Life could be better at this level, but it is your foundation. These necessities are groceries, shelter, basic utilities, clothing and transportation. These necessities are the cornerstones of your financial house and without them stress rises and your comfort level falls. They are non-negotiable. Each month, as you plan your written budget, these are the items to list right after savings. Groceries, not restaurants, are first since you need to eat.
